Elfcon 2015

Wow that was a fast year!

Hard to believe it is almost another Thanksgiving holiday here in the U.S.

I have a theory. I think foods are traditional to the holidays because great-great-great-granny had the good sense to realize that traditional = I don’t have to think about it.

It’s down to routine. Same shopping list. Same routine. Bake the cake and brine the turkey the day before, heave everything in the oven during the commercial breaks in the TV parade and bah-BAM. Dinner. The secret ingredient is to omit all the empty Clark-Griswold-ish expectations. If you are expecting a lot of fussy entertaining …you don’t know me very well. It’s just one day, but I’d rather save room for another helping of sweet potatoes than have a belly full of disingenuous-ness. Honesty is my favorite garnish. This year a piping hot mug of be yourself is on the menu.

Speaking of menu…let me take another stab at weekly menu ideas.

Monday: Spaghetti with green salad

Tuesday: Mushroom and Beef noodle soup

Wednesday: Yakionigiri with easy velvet corn soup

Thursday: Roast turkey, green bean casserole, black olives, mashed potatoes, pumpkin cake

Friday: turkey fried rice

Wishing Everyone a Happy Thanksgiving

Happy Tuesday

0

I know, I know…it’s tuesday and I’m still on like last friday or something…it’s that time of year.

Am winging it again, sort of …the youngling had a blip of interest in cooking and meal planning so like any sane mama I struck while that particular iron was still lukewarm…so it’s a few days of youngling chow until turkey day.

Tomorrow is prep day, I kind of like yutzing around in the kitchen like that…all I really do is make the brine, heave the turkey in, and make the “pumpkin pie cake” (as we call it. It’s really Paula Deens pumpkin bars). Thursday is the big show. Whole wheat irish soda bread with cream cheese and cranberry compote for brunch with the turkey, green bean casserole and potato smash for dinner. Easy. Not that much more than any other supper, since it’s just us…the up and the down of having a widely scattered family that tends to get together in summer instead of winter when it is easier for the older and school age generations to travel.

Eezy peezy. And plenty of time to watch tv and hit the panic button about all those holiday gifts that need finished and mailed.

Happy Thanksgiving

(and a wonderful week to everyone outside of the U.S., too)

Menu Ideas – 24 Jan 2014 – The Carnivore revolt

2

The rest of the family is in major carnivore mode. I kind of have a taste for a bucket of wings myself. That’s another thing that makes the concept of the ‘vampire diet’ interesting to me. Part of me wants to be vegan. I can totally see the spiritual motivation for it. It’d be nice to think that I was living without killing. I could go all karma-Buddhist on it. I’ve tried in the past. But after a while my eyes went black, the fangs snicked down and I ate a bucket of fried chicken – or at least a bacon cheeseburger. I allowed it to happen. I could have resisted, in the vampire tradition of Louis, Edward and Aiden, difficult as it would have been . Call it my evil monster side, but I’m not entirely convinced veganism is the right thing to do…but that is a whole other rant. All that has to do with this week’s menu ideas is I’m skipping the meatless thing this week. Maybe it’s the weather. When it’s so easily available, how do you say no to reasonable albeit meat containing comfort food requests from the family? Brush you fangs, folks. I suggest any chickens or turkeys reading this put on your running shoes.

Monday – spaghetti and (ground turkey) meatballs

Tuesday – Chicken and Dumplings

Wednesday – pasta faux-jule (padawan request)

Thursay – fajita – ish chicken wraps with wasaquacinnaise

Friday – pan-fried swai with sweet potato fries
